Who is Performance Skills Class for?

  • Singers of all ages, experience and genres
  • Young singers need to be in High School. No responsibility is taken for young singers, so parents are welcome to be observers
  • Singers wanting to determine if they want to register for lessons, Sounds of Southgate (Kate's ensemble), or as a participant in a Monday Performance Skills Class

What happens at Performance Class?
Performance Skills Class will begin with Voice Preparation (observers may also participate if they wish) and then be followed by performances by the participants, with feedback and tips on vocal and artistic issues. Each participant will receive approximately 12 minutes of performance and workshop time. In addition to this, singers will make further valuable, vocal and artistic discoveries by watching other performers hone their craft while receiving expert tuition.

As an observer you can watch Kate working with a range of singers of all ages and ability in the Monday Performance Skills Class.

What do I bring?
Singers are required to bring three copies of their music in the correct key, in three separate folders. (One for the accompanist, one for the teacher and their own study copy - a pencil to mark this is a good idea!)

No written critique will be given so singers are advised to record their segment.

Associate artist, the brilliant Linda O'Brien will be the regular PSC accompanist. Linda can play any type of music, including chord charts and lead sheets and she can transpose when required.

What else?
The end of each Semester will culminate in a Performance Night called PSC Plus, at a venue in Brunswick, with a different starting time of 7pm. This is an opportunity for regular PSC attendees to showcase their performance skills and invite family and friends to watch.

Performance Skills Class is also a forum and teaching practice opportunity for student singing teachers working towards their LTCL. (Licentiate of Trinity College, London, an internationally recognised degree equivalent in the specific practice of voice teaching).

A 45 minute Question Time will directly follow this class.

SongWorks

A new and exciting opportunity, offered exclusively at Kate's VoiceArt Consultancy.
SongWorks is a session with both our resident accompanist and co-artist Linda O'Brien and Master Teacher, Kate Sadler.

SongWorks is designed to be a stepping stone between your singing lesson and a performance of any kind including Performance Skills Class. It will also make your coaching lessons with Linda and your lessons with Kate much more effective. Accompaniments for your song can also be recorded in this session if you wish.

Once you know your song musically and vocally, it will be ready for a SongWorks session, during which all matters pertaining to artistry, dynamics, tempi, tempi variations, phrasing and the interplay between the accompaniment and the vocal line are explored. In other words the Art part of VoiceArt.
